Tugboat O' Trash

Getting Started

Always use your imagination and be creative when building this project or any others. It's your creation, so be inventive when looking for building supplies you just may be surprised! When building your project, experiment with new and different ways of putting it together. The most important thing is to have fun!

1Find these or similar supplies!

  • Milk or juice carton
  • Masking tape
  • Soap box
  • Toilet paper tube
  • Markers or pens for customizing
  • Toothpicks (optional)
  • String

21. Gather your supplies!

The first step to building your tugboat is cutting your milk carton in half lengthwise. I chose to have my front end be a little higher than the back. After you have cut out your boat hull you can lay out your ships design. The soapboxes will become your ships cabin, and the toilet paper tube will be a big smokestack. Try new things to come up with the best design using your supplies.

2. Add a layer of tape!

Now that your ship is designed you can start to put it together. I took all my pieces and first covered them in masking tape. I also used the tape to make my tires. Simply roll the tape onto itself and make little circles. We’ll attach these tires to the side of our boat later on.

43. Decorate the cabin!

Once everything is taped up you can start on the decorating! I took my cabin pieces and colored them, then I cut out some circles from paper and glued them on to make windows. Its usually easier to color or paint everything before gluing your pieces together.

4. Glue everything together!

After you are finished coloring your pieces you can glue everything together. You can make your tugboat any way you want, so try new colors and designs. Have fun making your boat!

5. Add details!

When I was finished putting my boat together I started working on the last details. I glued some toothpicks together to make the flagpole and radio receiver. The only thing left was to put on the tires! I colored my rings of tape black, then tied them to the sides of the boat using a little string and some tape. You could also use bottle caps or any small circular object as tires.

6. Finish your Tugboat O'Trash!

Voila! Your Tugboat is complete, and now you’re ready to pull the SS Milktastic safely into the LooLeDo Harbor! Remember to have fun!
